just get off the ship, most of the tours the ship offers you can do yourself at a fraction of the price . . don’t forget to take a card with the name of the ship plus the pier where the ship is docked so you can take a taxi back
If you wanna book an excursion, do so on the ship. I wouldn’t book with a private tour operator. Alternatively discover the cities by yourself and get infos beforehand out of the internet so that you can decide what exactly you wanna see where.
Barcelona can be done easily on your own. The port isn’t far from the city center and there is lots to do and see.
Villefrance is a beautiful little town, not much to do – you should go to Monaco from there.
Haven’t been to Livorno.
From Civitavecchia you must visit Rome! There are good train connections but you can easily get lost in the city if you don’t know your ways around. That I would do organized with the ship’s excursion.
Naples – well, another italian town… they say Pizza originates from here! If there is time it’s nice to take the scenic route up to the volcano Vesuv. Otherwise… stroll through town (it doesn’t really have one center…) and have a Pizza!
Venice can easily be done privately! Lots to see and one of the most beautiful ports to sail into!
Dubrovnik is a very pittoresque town, normally the organized tours go to a scenic point with the bus, then down again for a walk through the old parts of the town center. If the ship is on anker and uses the lifeboats to bring passengers ashore you’ll land directly in the town center. If the ship is docked in the port there should be a shuttle bus to the old town. To my opinion no organized excursion necessary.
Piraeus: If you haven’t been to Greece before you must go to Athens and that I would definitely book on board! The traffic in Athens and surroundings is very chaotic. You’ll be a lot more relaxed visiting the Akropolis when you do it organized and don’t have to stand in queues everywhere.
Enjoy, you are going onto a really nice cruise there! Lots of culture and still the necessary funfactor isn’t missing!
We did a 12 night Greek Island cruise and it was fabulous! Half the time we did the ship tours (athens, naples (sorrento/capri), olympia and the other half we would take the bus shuttle into town (kusadasi, dubrovnik) or rent scooters (mykonos, santorini)
The ship tours are fabulous and some of the trips offer private cars to take you around. Have fun!
